Will Terrell Owens be back in 2009? Maybe yes, maybe no. Only Jerry Jones knows for sure. That being said, we offer up what new Tampa Bay GM Mark Dominik said about releasing Derrick Brooks and others today.
This is how you release a big-name player, make a tough decision and handle it all with class. I’m not saying Jones can’t do this. But if he’s worried about how he’ll handle T.O.’s possible departure and the subsequent media backtracking that will be required, this is an excellent how-to example.
Step 1: Recognition of one’s honor. Dominik said the Bucs “let go of five very special people within the organization. … Derek obviously is one of the greatest Bucs of all time.”
Step 2: Admit today’s NFL salary cap realities. Said Dominik: “Again, these decisions are tough to make.”
Step 3: Make the call and never look back. This is the art of closing the deal. “But this is the decision we wanted to make and the direction we wanted to go,” Dominik said.
Anyone want to make a bet that we’ll be hearing some similar words from the Cowboys owner about one mercurial receiver long before August? Or, does everyone believe that Jones’ what-did-I-really-say? message of recent days indicates that T.O. stays?
