Starter looking for jump from Tony Romo

Last year, Tony Romo signed a big-time deal with apparel maker, Starter, as the brand tries to get back in the sports game.

Starter is an official partner with the New York Yankees, which played a part in Romo’s involvement with the Starlight Foundation. And remember the Cowboys and Yankees have paired up with Legends Hospitality Management this year, too.

At the time of his deal, Romo’s agreement with Reebok was coming to an end, and the quarterback liked the idea of being linked to a company with affordable clothing and shoes. Starter has an exclusive agreement to sell with Wal-Mart.

“My family, we needed to have stuff that was durable and would last a long time and still felt good,” Romo said. “That meant a lot. It’s high-quality stuff I wear now.

Romo said the men’s line is or less and the boys’ line is or less. Because it is not an official NFL sponsor, the Starter cleats Romo wears during games is not visible. But off the field, he can give the company much visibility.

Like during Wednesday’s round of golf with Tiger Woods.

Romo said he has sat in on some meetings with the company about design.

“I kind of tell them what I like, what feels good and what I think people who are playing sports like to feel,” Romo said. “They’ve put together a lot of great things that are coming out in the next session this fall.”
