We continue our player report cards by looking at running backs and fullbacks.
Marion Barber. C. In his first attempt as the full-time starter, Barber averaged only 3.7 yards a carry and rushed for 885 yards and scored seven touchdowns. He battled a dislocated pinkie toe for the last five weeks that hampered him. Yet, Barber didn’t appear to have the same physical style on a consistent basis.
Felix Jones. B. Hamstring and turf toe injuries forced Jones to miss the last ten games of the season. He rushed for only 266 yards but he scored four touchdowns and became that home run threat the Cowboys have been missing in their rushing attack. His ability to get outside and make defenders miss was a great weapon to have this season.
Tashard Choice. B. Skip Peete has been telling us all year that Choice has deceptive speed and that he was a better blocker than Felix Jones. He was right. Choice’s 88 yard performance in Pittsburgh was his coming out party. Choice gives the Cowboys another offensive threat for 2009.
Alonzo Coleman. Incomplete. Was called up to the active roster on Dec. 5 and didn’t play much.
Deon Anderson. C. Missed a few blocks on the blitz and could have been more consistent in the run game. Overall, Anderson was a beast on special teams and showed he can be used in the passing game, he caught a touchdown pass this season. Anderson has a bright future with the club and the Cowboys need to make sure he stays healthy.
Outlook: There are questions about the health at this position. Do we know if Barber and Jones can return from their injuries? A foot injury could cause some long-term problems here for Jones and Barber. Choice finished the year healthy and the club discovered they can rely on him. Anderson played through some injuries and next to Keith Davis, is probably one of the toughest guys on the team.
Next is the wide receivers, should be fun.
