The Cowboys search for a backup quarterback has ended with a trade for Detroit’s Jon Kitna but it cost them cornerback Anthony Henry.
(UPDATE: The team just confirmed the trade – Kitna for Henry straight up.)
Kitna, who turns 37 in September, has 152 touchdowns and 151 interceptions in his 12 years with Seattle, Cincinnati and Detroit. He has thrown for 27,293 yards in his career, but he played in only four games last year before the Lions put him on injured reserve.
Henry was entering the final year of his contract and the Cowboys were considering a full-time move to safety this season. He started 52 games in his four years with the Cowboys but had only one interception in 2008 after recording six in 2007.
The addition of Kitna reunites him with wide receiver Roy Williams, whom he helped earn a Pro Bowl bid in 2006, and awkwardly with Bradie James. After the Lions beat the Cowboys in 2006, Kitna made some disparaging remarks about James, but the two patched things up after Dallas beat Detroit in 2007.
Henry was due a million roster bonus in June and was scheduled to make .6 million in 2009. Kitna, who was a candidate to be released, has a year left on his contract and is scheduled to make .95 million, according to NFLPA figures.
