Could Mike Vick be the Cowboys’ Wildcat QB?

“We may want to do some things in our offense this year with a third quarterback. That’s something other than be there as a backup to the second quarterback and be there in case you lose all the quarterbacks … We could hopefully find a quarterback with a set of skills that we could put some packages in for.”

– Jerry Jones

Could Jerry Jones’ comments about the Wildcat have been a hint of the Cowboys’ interest in soon-to-be-ex-con Mike Vick?

It’s enough of a possibility for Michael Irvin to burn a segment on the topic during his ESPN 103.3 radio show yesterday. I tuned in just in time to hear ex-con Nate Newton say, “No! No! No! No Mike Vick!” before the commercial break.

If Roger Goodell gives Vick another chance in the NFL, there is little doubt that he could be “a quarterback with a set of skills that we could put some packages in for.”

Of course, a lot of hurdles would have to be cleared before Vick could play a down as a Cowboy, beginning with Goodell’s decision.

There is no way the Cowboys would assume Vick’s monster contract that he signed with the Falcons. So, unless Vick would be willing to re-do the contract as part of the trade, forget about a trade with the Falcons. If he’s released, Vick would have to accept that he wouldn’t have a shot to unseat Tony Romo as the franchise QB if he wanted to come to Valley Ranch.

Stranger things have certainly happened on Jerry’s watch, but I wouldn’t bet on Vick becoming a Cowboy. I reserve the right to change my mind, though, if Irvin gives Vick the Pacman treatment and gives him a whole show to tell his side of the story.
