The depth of the Cowboys roster at WR was certainly put to the test this week with the absence of Roy Williams and Sam Hurd from Saturday nights game against the 49ers, and lets just say they didn’t pass. The position as a whole looked absolutely dreadful. However, individually there was one bright spot at wide receiver, rookie Kevin Ogletree came up with some big catches in key situations, and looked very polished in his route running and determination.
On the other end of that evaluation was the very over-hyped Miles Austin. While Austin did manage to catch a couple of passes finally (after not having a catch the past two weeks) he once again managed to make more of an impact not catching the ball.
For the third week in a row Austin could be frequently found running less than stellar routes, quitting altogether on routes, and dropping passes that should have been easy snags. Beyond Miles Austin, there was the always disappointing Isaiah Stanback routinely running poor routes. Although Stanback did manage to catch one pass from Jon Kitna in the fourth quarter, which was then punched out of his arms and recovered by the defense.
Beyond the undrafted rookie free agent Kevin Ogletree, there was nothing to get excited about at the wide receiver position for the Cowboys. Personally I think it is time to hit the free agent market, preferably with the signing of Matt Jones, who is still available.
